Everyone can appreciate a good photograph, and one of the great things about the internet is that friends and loved ones can send us photographs from across the world – particularly important at the moment where travel is limited. But the one thing that ruins it all – photo filters.
I’m sure most of us know that photos we look at, day in and day out, have a good chance of being edited in some way and that is fine with me so long as it doesn’t negatively affect the original. I am sure I’ve never seen a photo on Facebook, Snapchat, Instagram, or elsewhere where a filter has been used that has been better than the original.
There are those that are used to make people look better – something many publications do anyway – by removing imperfections, freckles, third nipples, etc. They can actually also do some real harm to those suffering from body dysmorphia too.
Some people may feel the need to use them but I prefer to see people how they actually are. Then there is the next level of hell – the “funny” filters which turn you into a dog, rabbit, space alien or whatever “hilarious” character. And they really aren’t funny at all…
Perhaps between friends they may be fun, but not for memorable snaps or posting online. On this I am sure Freud would have said something about the individual.
I’m not anti-fun but I am sure we will go around regretting we added these filters to our photos in years to come. Perhaps it is just a generational thing. Everything has to visual and I just kinda like words as well.
I’m sure you’ve had enough of this groan anyway, but I just hate it when they ruin a perfectly good and sexy photo of a good looking woman. I personally don’t go in for the celebrities who post them (Kim Kardashian, Kylie Jenner, Nicki Minaj, or whoever) but they are excellent examples of the type of photos I mean. Sexy original, perhaps, but is the outcome sexy? I think not.
